Sensing an Embodied Masculine

SOMA Festival Praha 2022 -  Sunday 15:30 -17:00

Sensing an Embodied Masculine

This workshop is for all genders and takes a somatic approach to the question of the masculine.
What in your embodied experience feels connected to the masculine? We will enquire using the somatic tools of close awareness, guided and more free movement and creative expression in writing or drawing. When we are in touch with what we consider to be masculine, which sensations, movements and imagery arise? Exploring through the symbols of Convex, Arrow and Circle, we will then create a space for a journey into your own body's account of masculinity. Our aim is to bring more consciousness to this aspect of our humanity, by asking the endless somatic question 'what is my body telling me right now?'.

Joe Pamphilon (UK)

Joe studied an MA in Dance and Somatic Wellbeing at the University of Central Lancashire (UK). He is a Somatic Movement Educator working in the Scottish Borders and the Scottish Highlands. Joe's background is in mental health and wellbeing, authentic movement, facilitating wilderness retreats
and movement for creativity. His career has been in mental health medical and charity services, specialising in addictions. Joe now works with the body"s natural tendency towards health, balance,
ease of movement and responsively in the nervous system, and the patterns which can inhibit these.
A special interest of Joe is embodied masculinity, which he explored in his Master's research. "My experience of masculinity is an ongoing journey through shifting bodily sensations and movement that brings up words such as strength, shame, anger, tenderness and beauty. I am committed to exploring with others how our bodies tell us about masculinity, and what common ground there may be among us. I acknowledge the difficulty of this topic, with its legacy of violence and oppression. It is my hope that sensitive and honest embodied exploration of the masculine supports a shift from the unconscious to the conscious."
